Cat Hellisen

Cat Hellisen

Cat Hellisen writes dark fantasy for adults and children. Cat is quite fond of reading, hiking, archery, aikido, and meditation, though she does less of all of those things than she'd like to, mainly because The Internet is Evil and she has no willpower. She does manage to write stories in between marathon TV series sessions. Her work includes the novels When the Sea is Rising Red, Charm, and House of Sand and Secrets, and short stories in Apex, F&SF, Something Wicked, Shimmer, and Tor.com. Her latest novel is a fairy tale for the loveless, Beastkeeper.

Sarah has always been on the move. Her mother hates the cold, so every few months her parents pack their bags and drag her off after the sun. She’s grown up lonely and longing for magic. She doesn’t know that it’s magic her parents are running from.

When Sarah’s mother walks out on their family, all the strange old magic they have tried to hide from comes rising into their mundane world. Her father begins to change into something wild and beastly, but before his transformation is complete, he takes Sarah to her grandparents—people she has never met, didn’t even know were still alive.
Deep in the forest, in a crumbling ruin of a castle, Sarah begins to untangle the layers of curses affecting her family bloodlines, until she discovers that the curse has carried over to her, too. The day she falls in love for the first time, Sarah will transform into a beast . . . unless she can figure out a way to break the curse forever.

Then something shocking washes up on the beach: Ilven’s death has called out of the sea a dangerous wild magic. Haunted by her past and those who died because of her, she attempts to regain her status as the scion of a once-great House, while confronting her true feelings for her distant husband.

If MallenIve’s leaders have their way, Jannik will soon have no more rights than an animal, and a union that once seemed to offer a solution to Felicita’s problems is now a dangerous liability. Felicita’s feelings are conflicted and it is all too easy to fall into the prejudiced mindset of the higher castes…until faceless corpses begin turning up on the rubbish tips, and Felicita might be the only hope Jannik and his people have.
